Starting pitcher Luis Garcia will undergo ulnar collateral ligament surgery, also known as Tommy John Surgery, Houston Astros general manager Dana Brown announced on Friday evening.
There is no date for the procedure yet, according to the team. The right-handed pitcher was pulled after just eight pitches in the first inning of Monday’s game against the San Francisco Giants. Garcia was experiencing discomfort in his right elbow.
Houston announced in its release that Garcia will miss the remainder of the 2023 season, but he is expected to make a return at some point during the 2024 campaign. The usual timetable for Tommy John Surgery is 12 to 18 months.
Garcia started six games for the Astros during the 2023 season. He went 2-2 in those games with a 4.00 ERA, and he also had 31 strikeouts for the year.
