Big 12 report: Texas Players Confident Before Alabama Matchup

Texas opened its 2022 season with a win over Louisiana-Monroe 52-10.  Up next for the Horns is No. 1 Alabama.

Despite being 20 point underdogs, Longhorn players and coaches sounded a confident note this week in comments to the media.  Bijan Robinson spoke about setting physical tone and being prepared for battle saying “Just hit ’em in the mouth and not worry about anything else.”

Most fans and pundits are predicting an Alabama victory, but Texas linebacker DeMarvion Overshown says that a Texas win “would probably shock the world, but it would not shock anyone inside our locker room.”

For most observers  this game is an indicator of the state of the program but for head coach Steve Sarkisian says he is more concerned about “the way we play the game,” as he downplays the role this contest will have in defining the Longhorns’ season.

To pull off the victory Texas will almost certainly need an outstanding performance from Quinn Ewers who began his Longhorn career strong following an early interception, going 16/24 for 225 yards and two touchdowns.  The competition will be tougher and the spotlight brighter this week versus ‘Bama.

Around the Big-12

The Conference posted a strong opening weekend, with all but one team recording victories.  Only West Virginia was defeated versus Pitt in their resumed rivalry.

The conference offensive player of the week was Spenser Sanders, quarterback at Oklahoma State.  Sanders threw for 406 yards and three touchdowns, rushing for two more in the Cowboys’ win over Central Michigan.

Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week Lonnie Phelps lead Kansas in tackles with 7, including 4 for loss and 3 sacks. Phelps was the highest rated defensive end in the country according to PFF for his role in Kansas’ win over Tennessee Tech.

Derius Davis sparked TCU to a win over Colorado with his 60 yard punt return, the fourth of his career, and was awarded the Special Teams Player of the Week award.  Davis totaled 72 punt return yards and a 27 yard rushing touchdown.

West Virginia freshman running back CJ Donaldson was recognized as the Conference Newcomer of the Week inlight of his 125 yards on seven carries including his first career touchdown against Pittsburgh in a losing effort.
