Black Monday Tracker: Keeping up with all the job changes around the NFL

Black Monday comes every year at the end of the NFL season following the final week of the regular season. It is the day where the bulk of the eventual coaching and GM vacancies open up around the league. Here, we will track what jobs open up around the NFL.

Washington Commanders fire offensive coordinator Scott Turner:

The Commanders have fired offensive coordinator Scott Turner and will be looking for a new play-caller heading into next season. Turner spent the last three seasons as Washington’s offensive coordinator. Prior to that, he has coached for the Minnesota Vikings, Carolina Panthers, and Cleveland Browns. He worked for Ron Rivera in Carolina as an offensive quality control man.

Kliff Kingsbury fired by Arizona Cardinals:

The Cardinals are moving on from their head coach after four seasons. Kingsbury was let go after his worst season as head coach of the team and only putting up one winning season in 2021. He was let go less than a year after signing a five-year extension keeping him through the 2027 season. Kingsbury was brought in after coaching Texas Tech for six years and was given preference by the organization because of his presumed relationship with franchise quarterback Kyler Murray. Kingsbury went 28-37-1 in his four seasons with Arizona.

Cardinals will not retain Steve Keim as GM:

The Arizona Cardinals will not bring back Steve Keim as their general manager; however, they have opened up the possibility for him to return to the organization in a different role. He has held the GM job since 2013 after replacing Rod Graves and recently signed a five-year extension locking him up through the 2027 season. Keim stepped away from the organization earlier in the year due to health concerns. Reports say that the Cardinals are considering keeping both Quentin Harris and Adrian Wilson in a co-GM role.

Browns move on from defensive coordinator Joe Woods:

Woods was someone who fans were calling to get fired after an underwhelming defensive season for the Browns. Woods has spent the last three seasons with the Browns as their defensive coordinator after spending several years with both the Minnesota Vikings and the San Francisco 49ers. The firing of Woods does not indicate a change at head coach, as Kevin Stefanski appears to be safe.

Lovie Smith fired by Texans:

Just hours following the win against the Indianapolis Colts, the Texans relieved head coach Lovie Smith of his duties after just one season. This is now the second straight year the Texans have had a one-and-done head coach. Smith went 3-13-1 with the Texans this season, closing it out with a win that cost them the number one pick in this year’s draft. After Smith’s nine-year tenure with the Chicago Bears, he has struggled to find success. He spent two years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he went 8-24 in two seasons as their head coach. The Texans will head into next season with their fourth head coach in the past four seasons.
