Davis Mills on Texans game-winning drive: “You’ve got to get lucky.”
In what is likely to be his final game in a Houston Texans uniform, Davis Mills led a game-winning drive with less than a minute to go.
So many times this season, the Houston Texans failed in the fourth quarter. Davis Mills became the poster boy for those failures, and many of them involved critical sacks or turnovers by Mills. In Week 18, it was Mills with the ball in his hands and a chance to win the game. This time, he delivered.
On the final drive, Mills converted a pair of fourth-and-long situations, including the fourth-and-20 from the Indianapolis 28 that wound up being the go-ahead score.
“I mean, we knew what we needed to do, go down and find a way to get in the end zone and score a touchdown. It was an unbelievable feeling, converted a couple critical fourth-down situations, fourth-and-longs, and guys were just making plays. The offensive line stepped up and gave me really good protection, and guys were making plays on the edge. Fortunately, Jordan Akins stepped up big time. I think a defender might have mistimed his jump a little bit, but luck was on our side, found a way to make a play and get in the end zone, made a big-time catch for the touchdown, and ended up answering again for the 2-point conversion. Altogether though, that just shows how much this team has fought all season. I think this game displayed that the best. A lot of ups and downs. The guys found a way to fight, and we got the result we ended wanted at the end.”
Mills described what he saw as the final play developed.
“Yeah, we’re motioning to empty, and everyone is basically running down the field and getting in the end zone. I’ve got to buy enough time to find somebody who’s open. I felt like everybody was pretty much covered. They did a good job defending it, dropping a lot of guys deep, and kind of just threw one up to Jordan (Akins), and he ended up making a play. It was awesome.”
Mills also revealed that Akins wasn’t exactly open on that play.
“Yeah, I mean, I think they covered him, there might have been two or three guys around him, but I thought he was my best guy to go up and make a play right there and trusted him to do that, and he scored. It was awesome.”
So, Mills threw a ball over the middle of the field into double or triple coverage and thought that was his best option?
“Basically, yeah. Sometimes it boils down to that. You’ve got to get lucky.”
