Former Arkansas safety Catalon signs with Texas
The Texas Longhorns picked up a major addition today as former Arkansas safety Jalen Catalon announced his intention to transfer to Austin via the portal.
Catalon was a four-star prospect out of Legacy High School in Mansfield, Texas, where he starred on both sides of the ball.
At Arkansas, Catalon struggled with injuries but was a huge contributor when healthy. In four seasons, Catalon played in only 18 games, but he recorded 159 tackles and five interceptions and was an All-SEC safety in 2020. He is slightly undersized, but his athleticism more than makes up for his limitations. If he can stay healthy, he should be a force to be reckoned with in his senior season.
The Longhorn defense improved dramatically this season, and the Texas secondary should be even better in 2023 now that they have picked up Catalon and Gavin Holmes from Wake Forest.
This pickup also continues the strong recruiting performance of Steve Sarkisian and his staff. Catalon and Holmes will join the top five class signed by the Longhorns in December while adding to Sarkisian’s success attracting transfers after luring Quinn Ewers to Austin last year.
This infusion of talent is one more indicator that the Longhorn program is trending up, and fans have a real reason for optimism.
