Fred Faour: 5 reasons why Georgia wins the national title

Let’s face it; we all want TCU to pull off the upset in Monday’s National Championship game. But the defending champion Georgia Bulldogs are loaded. Here are five reasons the ‘Dawgs will repeat:

  1. Stetson Bennett IV. His name is pretentious. He doesn’t look the part. But Bennett is on the verge of leading his team to back-to-back titles. All he does is protect the football, make plays when needed, and is a terrific leader. He might not be the most talented player, but as a college football quarterback, he is perfect for Georgia. Over 3,800 yards passing, 23 touchdowns, and seven interceptions during the season. Those numbers are perfect for a team like Georgia. Bennett will be a big key to beating TCU.
  2. Defense, defense, defense. Georgia is vulnerable to a good passing attack (see the Ohio State game), and TCU can take advantage of that. But the ‘Dawgs are loaded with NFL talent, even with injuries and attrition. Are they as good as last year? No. But are they good enough to win this? Absolutely.
  3. Tight ends. Georgia’s superpower is that the Bulldogs have two of the top tight ends in the country. Brock Bowers has almost 800 yards receiving, and Darnell Washington has over 400 receiving yards. Washington is injured and is questionable but should play. Both are tough matchups for anyone.
  4. Run the damned ball. Georgia does not have a Nick Chubb or Sony Michel, but they had three players go over 500 yards rushing. If the Bulldogs can run the ball and control the clock, TCU will have a tough time.
  5. Been there, done that. The Bulldogs have one loss in two years – to Alabama in the SEC Championship last year. This year they have only been in danger twice – against Missouri and Ohio State. Every other game, they dominated. That’s just what they do. So as much as we would like to see TCU win, it is going to take a herculean effort. Because Georgia is just that good.
