Fred Faour: Cougars get huge win in bid for No. 1 seed

The Houston Cougars went into Virginia and knocked off the No. 2 team in the country. It was an important win because the Cougars will not get another chance to improve their status as a potential No. 1 seed.

The American Conference is not as strong as it has been in past years. The Cougars will be favored in every game they play the rest of the season.

Houston may not be No. 1 right now, but the Cougars are one of the best teams in the country. They have a great team that will win the AAC in their last year in the conference.

But the goal is a No. 1 seed, and the Cougars needed Saturday’s win to secure one. They now have quality wins over tournament teams like Oregon, Kent State, St. Mary’s, and now Virginia. The only loss was to a really talented Alabama team, which upset the Cougars a week ago.

Houston is a legitimate title contender. The Final Four is at NRG Stadium. It could be an amazing year. But so much depends on seeding and the bracket. And the Cougars took a big step toward locking down a top seed with the win over an excellent Virginia team.

Of course, they will have to keep winning. By why would they not? This is a deep, talented team with huge aspirations. Saturday showed just how good they are.

The Cougars might not have locked down a No. 1 seed. But they took a big step on Saturday.
