Fred Faour: Final Four sexiness is in the eye of the beholder
So it was not the sexiest Final Four ever in terms of teams. UConn is a bit of a blue blood but does not have the biggest following. When Miami knocked off Houston and Texas, ticket prices plummeted. Florida Atlantic? San Diego State?
No Houston. No Alabama. No Purdue. No Kansas.
But we were treated to buzzer beater and a competitive game as San Diego State knocked off Florida Atlantic. UConn was dominant and looks tough to beat.
Past Final Fours in Houston include Villanova over North Carolina in 2016. UConn has been here before – beating a surprising Butler in 2011.
In 1971 a dominant UCLA team beat Villanova 68-62. So there is a good chance that after Monday night, the four champions crowned in Houston will be UCLA, Villanova, and UConn twice.
That’s pretty sexy.
In some ways, it felt a little anti-climactic. The idea of the University of Houston making the Final Four in the city had the area excited. So many UH fans are still struggling with the Miami loss. But watching the games with a group of UH fans – even amid the disappointment – they enjoyed the finish in the San Diego State game. There was a pride in having the event just up the road and having the eyes of the country on NRG Stadium and the incredible finish.
And we get one more game tomorrow night. UConn and San Diego State might not seem sexy, but it is an interesting matchup. The dominant Huskies. The Surprising Aztecs.
Let’s sit back and enjoy this last moment in Houston. It might be sexy after all.
