Fred Faour: H-Town might be the most interesting sports city in America right now

The Super Bowl is set, and fans of the Eagles and Chiefs are thrilled. The Chiefs players are quickly becoming heels with their trash talking. Who does not love a little smack?

Regardless, while Kansas City and Philly celebrate, Houston might be the most interesting sports city in America right now.

After all, the World Champion Astros live here. Spring training is right around the corner, and the team is poised for another great run.

One of the best college basketball teams in the country lives here. The Houston Cougars could easily make another Final Four run. And did we mention the champion will be crowned at NRG Stadium? The next team to hoist the CFP Championship trophy will do it in H Town as well. No other city has that.

Even H Town’s bottom feeders are interesting. The Texans have hired the hottest young head coaching candidate in the country with 49ers DC Demeco Ryans. They will pick second in the draft and get a franchise quarterback. Yes, they were terrible on the field, but that’s why they have such a high pick and will be fun to watch in the offseason. Ryans, a former Texan, should electrify the fan base and help boost the rebuild.

The Rockets are on track for another high lottery pick, and if they land in the top two, they can get potential stars in Victor Wembanyama or Scoot Henderson. Either could be franchise changers. Throw in the fact they already have young, budding stars in Jalen Green, Jabari Smith, and Alperen Sengun, all of whom are headed to the NBA Rising Stars Event on All-Star weekend … They also have a nice young role player in Tari Eason. These are players that should get better, and with another star in the fold, the Rockets should be back in the playoff mix.

Yes, two of the major sports teams are interesting because they are bad. But that creates excitement in the draft.

More interesting sports cities?

You could make a case for Philadelphia. The Eagles are about to win the Super Bowl. The Phillies made the World Series (only to be spanked by the Astros). The 76ers are the old Rockets; good enough to tease but also a James Harden team. They also actually have hockey – which Houston needs – but the Flyers are not bad enough to be on Connor Bedard stakes and not good enough to be interesting.

Boston? Sure, the best teams in basketball and hockey. But the Patriots have become irrelevant. And who would want to live in Boston?

Houston will get the Roughnecks back in 2023 with Wade Phillips coaching. Small time? Sure. But a lot of fun.

Next season UH football and basketball will debut in the Big 12. Huge things are ahead.

So yeah, enjoy your moments, KC and Philly.

Houston is doing just fine.
