With the NFL Draft less than 10 days away, several Houston Cougars football players are gearing up for the three-day event in Kansas City, Missouri.

Safety Gervarrius Owens is one of multiple players from this past season’s Houston Cougars team that is hoping to hear his name called at some point in the 2023 NFL Draft.

The UH alumnus spent part of his Monday morning chatting with Jason McCourty, Kyle Brandt, Peter Schrager, and Jamie Erdahl on the NFL Network’s Good Morning Football.

Owens talked about a variety of topics including how going through the junior college, or JUCO, route at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M before joining Houston helped him grow as a player; his leadership style; and his former teammate Marcus Jones, who had stellar moments for the New England Patriots in his rookie season.

Owens played four seasons with the Cougars beginning in 2019. He graduated from Houston with a Bachelor of Science degree in sociology. The Moore, Oklahoma native was a team captain for UH in 2022.

He had 74 total tackles, which was second on the team behind leader Donavan Mutin, forced two fumbles, and got one interception for Houston during the 2022 season. Owens has met with several teams leading up to the draft, including the Houston Texans.

The first round of the NFL Draft will be on April 27, with the second and third rounds happening on April 28 and the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh rounds on April 29.
