Houston Cougars football running back Alton McCaskill expected to enter transfer portal

The Houston Cougars football team is expected to suffer a big blow to its running back core for the 2023 season, the program’s first in the Big 12.

Alton McCaskill, who starred for the Cougars as a true freshman in 2021, is expected to enter the transfer portal on Wednesday, a school spokesperson confirmed to Gallery Sports on Tuesday night.

McCaskill rushed for 961 yards and caught 21 passes for an additional 113 yards in 2021. He missed all of the 2022 season after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament, or ACL, on his left knee during Houston’s spring session.

“A group led by me and a few other returners, I think the sky is the limit for us,” McCaskill told reporters on April 4 about the running backs group heading into the new season.

“I think we can be one of the best running back groups in the nation,” McCaskill stated.

Less than 22 days later, he is expected to be on his way out of Houston and heading to a different program. The second transfer window allowed by the NCAA for fall sports opened on April 15. It will close again on April 30.
