Houston Cougars basketball junior guard Jamal Shead is seeking to gauge where he is viewed at the next level and will go through the NBA Draft process, a source with knowledge of the program confirmed to Gallery Sports.
Shead’s decision to go through the NBA Draft process was first reported by Jon Chepkevich of Draft Express. The 6-foot-1-inch Manor native averaged 10.5 points, 5.4 assists, three rebounds, and 1.7 steals per game for the 2022-23 season.
Going through the process allows Shead to participate in the NBA Draft Combine, which is slated to take place from May 15-21 in Chicago this year. He can also participate in individual team tryouts.
Shead will be able to get feedback from NBA scouts and personnel about where they view him, what areas of his game are strong, and what other parts need improvement.
The early entry deadline for underclassmen wanting to declare for the NBA Draft is April 23. Houston redshirt sophomore guard Tramon Mark could be another player that goes through the process to get feedback from NBA personnel.
NCAA rules require Shead to remove his name from the NBA Draft list within 10 days after the conclusion of the combine to remain eligible to play in the 2023-24 basketball season, which will be Shead’s senior year.
The early entry withdrawal deadline for underclassmen that wish to keep their collegiate eligibility is May 31 at 10:59 p.m. CT.
Guard Marcus Sasser went through the NBA Draft process last year before deciding to return for his senior season with the Houston Cougars.
