Houston Cougars men’s basketball is ranked third in first preseason AP Poll

The Houston Cougars men’s basketball team continues to garner a lot of praise in the preseason.

Houston is the third-ranked team in the country in the first Associated Press Poll of the 2022-23 season. The Cougars’ are ranked No. 3 or higher in an AP preseason poll for the first since before the 1983-84 season. UH made it all the way to the national championship game that season.

The league’s coaches also picked the Cougars to win the American Athletic Conference last week. Houston was a unanimous pick to win the conference. In addition, UH guard Marcus Sasser was picked to be the preseason player of the year in the conference. UH freshman forward Jarace Walker was selected to win the AAC rookie of the year.

Both Sasser and guard Jamal Shead were named to one of the AAC’s All-Conference teams. Sasser was a unanimous pick on the first team. Shead was picked for the conference’s preseason second team.

Houston’s season will tip off on Nov. 7 at the Fertitta Center against Northern Colorado.
