Jockey’s big days headline Sam Houston Race Park weekend

Sam Houston Race Park wrapped up a three-day weekend of live racing Monday. Over the course of the weekend, more than 250 horses competed in 35 races for more than $780,000 in purses.

Jockey Lane Luzzi opened the weekend in fine style, riding winners in the first, seventh, and ninth races on Friday. Floyd Wethey Jr. matched this triple on Monday, recording a natural hat trick in the second, third, and fourth races.

Multiple stakes winner Ima Discreet Lady added to her career win total with an optional claiming victory in the seventh on Monday. This daughter of Discreet Cat has taken home more than $500,000 in her 43-race career. Ima Discreet Lady has won 13 times, finished second eight times, and third eight times.

Trainer J.R. Caldwell also had a strong weekend, winning four races on Saturday and two on Friday. The training standings will look much different when they are updated this week.

There is one more weekend remaining before Sam Houston hosts the Houston Racing Festival on Saturday, January 28. The Festival will feature multiple stakes races, including two graded stakes, the Houston Lady’s Classic (G3) and the John Connally Turf Cup (G3).

Live racing will continue every weekend through April 8.
