Houston Cougars basketball head coach Kelvin Sampson said senior guard and All-American Marcus Sasser is a game-time decision for the team’s first NCAA Tournament game.

Sampson spoke with reporters on Wednesday afternoon ahead of Houston’s game against Northern Kentucky on Thursday night in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

“He did some things today, broke a sweat, did some shooting drills,” Sampson said. “He didn’t go full speed, so that’s the update. I don’t know, we will see. The game is at 8:20 tomorrow night. It is one of those infamous game-time decisions, I guess.”

Sasser leads the team with 17.1 points per game. He is also averaging 3.2 assists, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.7 steals a contest. While Sampson did not commit to whether his guard would play or not, he did say if the team doctors determine there is no risk for him to aggravate his injury, Sasser will play.

While the Dallas native has been a big piece of the puzzle in Houston’s success this season, the Cougars will not let his injury, if it indeed forces him to miss time, affect how they prepare.

“We approach it the same way we do every game,” junior guard Jamal Shead said. “Same mindset, same preparation. Just come in ready to work, come in listening and come in focused.”
