Jim McIngvale, known to many as “Mattress Mack” and the founder of this web site, will be honored with the Mr. Fitz Award at the National Turf Writers and Broadcasters Awards dinner on Nov. 2, in Lexington, Kentucky.  The award is given annually to individuals who typify the spirit of horse racing.

McIngvale will receive the award in recognition of his work to promote thoroughbred racing and his stallion Runhappy, the 2015 Champion male sprinter.  The award is also in recognition of his generous spirit in the face of various regional emergencies and for his willingness to risk large sums on wagers that bring attention to various charities.

Runhappy was purchased by McIngvale for $200,000 as a yearling at Keeneland in Lexington, Kentucky.  He was a multiple graded stakes winner including the Grade I Breeders’ Cup Sprint, the Grade I King Bishop Stakes, the Grade I Malibu Stakes, and the Grade III Keenon Ogden Phoenix Stakes.  Runhappy is a prolific sire that now stands at Claiborne Farm.

The NTWBA will also recognize photographer Barbara Livingston, broadcaster Chris Lincoln and Turf Writers Tom Pedulla and Mike Welsch.
