Shannon Dawson leaves Houston Cougars football program

Shannon Dawson is no longer a part of the Houston Cougars football program, a source confirmed to Gallery Sports on Tuesday afternoon.

Dawson, who spent last season as the Cougars’ passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach, oversaw the team’s offensive play calling for much of the year, head coach Dana Holgorsen said throughout the 2022 season.

Dawson is expected to be the new quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator at Miami, and the deal with the Hurricane should be finalized soon, the source told Gallery Sports. The news that Dawson was going to go to Miami and leave Houston was first reported by Sports Illustrated.

At this time, Houston has not officially announced any coaching staff moves. According to The Football Scoop, the Cougars are set to promote Michael Burchett as the team’s new quarterbacks coach. The report did not mention if that would also include the offensive coordinator’s responsibilities of playcalling.

In the 2021 season, which saw Houston finish with a 12-2 record, Holgorsen oversaw play-calling for most of the year, but he eventually passed those responsibilities to Dawson toward the end of the season around the games against Memphis and Connecticut, Holgorsen said earlier in the 2022 season.

The Houston head coach said being able to focus on big-picture situations during game days helped him out, which is one of the reasons he gave up play-calling duties during the 2021 year.

Dawson controlled Houston’s playcalling for the 2022 season. Despite criticisms of Houston’s offense during stretches in the 2022 year, Holgorsen publicly backed Dawson and supported him as UH’s offensive coordinator.
