FORT WORTH — Houston Cougars basketball senior guard Marcus Sasser will play against the Memphis Tigers in the American Athletic Conference Championship game, according to a source with knowledge of the program.
Sasser did not start against Memphis, but a UH spokesperson said he is not ruled out for the game against the Tigers.
Sasser suffered the injury during Houston’s AAC Tournament semifinal against Cincinnati. The injury occurred when he planted his foot to crossover to his left in the first half. The Dallas native then slipped and fell hard to the court. The program later revealed that Sasser was dealing with a groin injury.
Houston’s staff gave Sasser extensive treatment at the team hotel on Saturday, the program announced. He was going to be re-evaluated by associate athletic director for sports medicine John Houston and team doctors prior to Sunday’s game against the Tigers.
Following the game against Cincinnati, Houston head coach Kelvin Sampson said the team would err on the side of caution in regard to Sasser’s health. He was officially listed as a game-time decision for the game.
Sasser went through the team’s shootaround on Sunday morning, the source told Gallery Sports. He felt good enough to try and play, the source added.
“[Sasser is] going to give it a go,” the source said.
Rest him, a win would be nice but not critical. I’d rather not jeopardize his health with the big tourney on the horizon.
