Texans complete interview with Giants OC Mike Kafka

The Houston Texans continue their head coaching search, interviewing New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka on Sunday.

The Houston Texans completed an interview with New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka for their head coaching vacancy on Sunday, according to multiple reports.

Kafka, 35, took over as the offensive coordinator for the Giants in 2022 after five seasons as an assistant in Kansas City under Andy Reid. Kafka started as an offensive quality control coach for the Chiefs in 2017, was promoted to quarterbacks coach the following season, and added passing game coordinator to his quarterback duties in 2020.

Kafka helped to revitalize the careers of Giants quarterback Daniel Jones and running back Saquon Barkley. He accomplished this despite an overall lack of offensive talent and an injury-ravaged wide receivers corps.

Jones, whose fifth-year option was declined by the Giants due to his inconsistency and proclivity for turnovers, posted a career season in 2022. Jones posted career bests in completions (317), attempts (472), completion percentage (67.2%), and quarterback rating (92.5). He also threw a career low five interceptions. His six total turnovers were also a career low.

Jones established himself as a true dual-threat quarterback in 2022 as well, rushing for 708 yards and seven touchdowns, both career bests.

Jones displayed a newfound knack for picking up first downs and making key plays, especially late in games. He became a true team leader in his fourth season, but first under Kafka.

Barkley, in his fifth season, rebounded from a pair of injury-marred campaigns to post a career high 1,312 yards and 10 touchdowns. Barkley was the focal point of the Giants’ offense, and he delivered as the league’s fourth leading rusher.

The Texans have now interviewed every candidate they had put a request in to speak with.
