Texans hire Cardinals defensive line coach Matt Burke as new defensive coordinator
The Houston Texans have made their first significant hire under new head coach DeMeco Ryans. The Texans are hiring former Arizona Cardinals defensive line coach Matt Burke to serve as their new defensive coordinator.
Burke, 46, comes in with 19 years of experience in the NFL and two in a significant coaching role, as he served as the defensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins in 2017 and 2018. He started with the Tennessee Titans as an administrative assistant for two seasons before being promoted to a defensive quality control coach, where he would hold that role for three more years. He was then hired by the Detroit Lions under Jim Schwartz as the linebackers coach. He would work in Detroit for five years before taking on the same role with the Cincinnati Bengals.
After just two years in Cincinnati, the Dolphins hired him for one season as their linebackers coach before eventually promoting him to defensive coordinator. After leaving Miami, he spent two years with the Philadelphia Eagles in multiple roles. His last two seasons were spent as a game management coach for the New York Jets and as Arizona’s defensive line coach under Kliff Kingsbury.
Burke went to Dartmouth College and played defensive back.
