Texans hire Bobby Slowik as new offensive coordinator
According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Media, the Houston Texans have hired former San Francisco 49ers passing game coordinator Bobby Slowik as their new offensive coordinator under DeMeco Ryans. With this hire, the Texans have filled both coordinator positions.
Slowik and new Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans spent the past six seasons together with the San Francisco 49ers.
Former Arizona Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury also interviewed with the Texans for the role of offensive coordinator. The position was vacant after Houston opted against retaining Pep Hamilton after finishing 31st in total offense (283.5 yards per game) and tied for 30th in scoring offense (17.0 points) last season.
Slowik, 35, has 10 years of NFL experience, most recently with the 49ers. He started out as a defensive quality control coach for San Francisco before he was promoted to an offensive assistant in 2019. After two years in that position, he was hired as the offensive passing game coordinator for the team.
Slowik is reportedly given a significant amount of credit for the development and success of 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, who was drafted with the last pick in last year’s draft and proceeded to lead them to the NFC Championship Game. Kyle Shanahan also is said to think very highly of Slowik.
Slowik is the son of longtime NFL, CFL, and FBS defensive coach Bob Slowik.
The Texans hired former Cardinals defensive line coach Matt Burke as their defensive coordinator earlier this week.
