Texans to interview Sean Payton

According to reports, the Houston Texans have asked for and received permission to interview the former New Orleans Saints head coach.

Payton has two years remaining on his contract with the Saints, so any team wishing to hire Payton will need to trade for him. Any trade for Payton is likely to include a first-round pick.

In addition to being a Super Bowl champion in New Orleans, Payton is recognized as an offensive guru and innovator. He also turned around a 3-13 Saints team to 10-6 and an NFC title game in his first year as the team’s head coach. Over 15 seasons as the coach of the Saints, Payton amassed a cumulative record of 152-89, a .631 winning percentage. He is 9-8 in the postseason, including a highly dubious loss to the Los Angeles Rams in the 2018 NFC Championship Game due to a hideously blown pass interference call that resulted in the league changing their rules.

Payton last coached the Saints in 2021.
