Texans trade for Bucs starting guard Shaq Mason

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Houston Texans have acquired guard Shaq Mason and a seventh-round pick from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in exchange for a sixth-round pick.

The move solidifies both guard positions on the offensive line for Houston, with second-year guard Kenyon Green set to man the other spot. Other reports have indicated that the acquisition of Mason could lead to the release of veteran lineman A.J. Cann.

Mason, 29, is entering his ninth season in the NFL with his third team. He spent the first seven years of his career with the New England Patriots after being drafted with the 131st pick in the fourth round of the 2015 NFL Draft. Mason became a staple on New England’s top-tier offensive line, helping them win two Super Bowls in his time there.

In March of 2022, Mason was traded from the Patriots to the Buccaneers in exchange for a fifth-round pick in the 2022 Draft, reuniting him with his teammate in New England, Tom Brady. He started all 17 games last season for the Bucs.

The addition of Mason further strengthens the offensive line in preparation for a presumed rookie quarterback that will likely be drafted with the second overall pick this year.
