The SWAC Attack

Alcorn State 23, Prairie View A&M 16 (OT)

After scoring 58 points last week against Bethune-Cookman, Prairie View A&M struggled to get going offensively in this one. The Panthers were scoreless in the first half before finally catching some momentum in the third quarter putting up 13 points to take the lead. However, the offense cooled off in the fourth leading to overtime where PVAMU would lose the game on a pick. QB Trazon Connley, who has shown some efficiency this season, only completed 50% of his throws for a touchdown and a pick. Connley felt pressure most of the night being sacked four times and rarely sitting in a clean pocket. RB Jaden Stewart was most of PVAMU’s offense rushing for 94 yards on 20 carries. Despite solid numbers, the back who is averaging 6.6 yards per carry was held in check without a score. Prairie View’s run defense continued to be the liability allowing over 200 yards on the ground. Alcorn State RB Jarveon Howard ran for 125 yards and a touchdown on 29 carries dicing up the Panthers’ defense. Braves QB Tre Lawrence was held to only seven completions, but Prairie View’s inability to stop the run gave them the opportunity to control the game on the ground. Prairie View A&M falls to 5-4 on the season after winning two straight prior to Friday night. They will look to rebound offensively on the road against Arkansas-Pine Bluff next week.

Jackson State 41, Texas Southern 14

With this loss, Texas Southern falls to below .500 on the season at 4-5 after taking a tough loss to Jackson State. After being outscored 21-7 in the first quarter, the Tigers just could not get the ball rolling offensively. QB Andrew Body completed nine of 23 passes for 132 yards and a touchdown. With that said, this game was about the defense for Texas Southern allowing almost 500 yards of total offense. The Texas Southern defense has been a bright spot for most of the season ranking in the top 50 in both passing and total defense. They also only allow a 29.4% third-down conversion rate. However, this Jackson State team is undefeated for a reason. Jackson State RB Sy’Veon Wilkerson ran for 214 yards and a touchdown on 26 carries and was the star of the offense in a big way. QB Shedeur Sanders continued to show his ability with another massively productive week. He threw for 252 yards and three touchdowns while completing 23 of 30 pass attempts. Texas Southern will look to rebound next week in their third straight home game as they take on Grambling State.
