Yuli Gurriel moving on from Astros?

The former batting champion and gold glover is expected to sign a deal with the Miami Marlins.

Former Houston Astros first baseman Yuli Gurriel, a player who has been a part of two championship runs and four pennants, appears to be moving on.

Gurriel, 38, is expected to sign a one-year deal with the Miami Marlins, according to longtime MLB insider Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

Media and fans alike have speculated on the status of Gurriel and if the Astros had intentions of bringing him back. While the Astros have publicly said the right things regarding Gurriel, the drawn-out nature of the events has caused skepticism regarding the Astros’ true plans.

Astros great Jeff Bagwell, who has been serving as an advisor to Astros owner Jim Crane, recently addressed the status of Gurriel and the team at Astros Fan Fest on Saturday when speaking to Fox 26 Houston sports director Mark Berman:

His comments had many wondering if the team no longer saw Gurriel as a fit, but that is not the case.

According to Nightengale, the Astros have an offer on the table for Gurriel to remain with the team in a bench role, but the former gold glover and batting champion wants the opportunity to play every day.

Should those opportunities not present themselves for Gurriel, the team appears to still be interested in bringing back La Piña in a reserve role.
